repost from January

I've wanted to write about There Will Be Blood since I saw it over the holidays. For some reason it's haunting me, following me, making me want to go see it again. This is the best piece of film making I have seen in I cannot even comment in how long. This caliber of film that came out of studios during the late 60's and early 70's and has been a rare thing since. Paul Thomas Anderson is a talented film maker and I have enjoyed all his films (okay maybe not Punch Drunk Love but I pretend that didn't happen). He has a unique talent to immerse the viewer in a world of his creation. Auteurism is so rare these days some people might not know what this means. Basically is means he wrote, directed it, and is his vision from start to finish. Most films are a products of many people working on the script, some that you do not even see listed as screen writers, then it is picked apart by the studios and tested so that they can figure out how to make the most money out of their "product". Well there might be blood is not a studio product but a filmmakers vision and a completely stunning one at that.

Based on Upton Sinclair's "Oil", There Might Be Blood is the must see in the theater movies this year. Some films you can wait for video, some will give you a good enough experience to watch it on a large screen TV in DTS, but this film is so visceral, so aural, please try to see it in the theater.

There is a reason it was given two nods from the Golden Globes committee and I hope soon to see it pull in some Oscar gold. I don't know if that will happen. I know it will receive nominations but is Hollywood ready for a film like this when more traditional and universally palatable options are also in the running. I hope so. And PT Anderson, I forgive you for Punch Drunk Love.

BECCA Spring 2008 Paradise Lost

BECCA Paradise Lost Spring 2008 Collection
by storybookheroine

Sensual femininity is accentuated this season with BECCA’s Paradise Lost Collection, an alluring selection of coquettish shades fit for enchantment. Inspired by a garden of earthly delights, lips and cheeks are in full bloom with windswept pink, eyes are gilded in bronze, and skin is effortlessly illuminated with a dusting of golden beige shimmer.

This is going to be a beautiful collection!   The cheeks and lips are a soft pinky-coral that is surprisingly wearable and feminine.  The eyes are a simple wash of shimmering bronze.  New items for Paradise Lost are a Lip and Cheek Creme in Tuberose, a Soft Touch Blush in Coquette, an Eye Tint in Gilt and a Nude Lip Liner Duo in Fondant.   Daiquiri Glossy Lip Tint and Ultimate Mascara in Black (new from Holiday 2007) are repromoted items.

As of now I have Tuberose Lip and Cheek and Daiquiri Glossy Lip Tint so I tried to fake the look with my extensive BECCA collection and I was surprised at the fresh soft coral pop of the cheeks and lips and how comfortable and flattering the look is (one of these days it will stick in my head that coral shades are one of my favorites).    I faked Coquette with Wisp Soft Touch Blush but Wisp is darker than Coquette which is much closer in shade to the super popular Hyawatha Pressed Shimmer Powder according to BECCA.    I cannot wait to get my hands on it! Fondant is a pink matte nude with a skin tone beige highlighter (I asked and it is slightly different than the highlighting end of Nougat Lip Liner).    Gilt Eye Tint is a shimmering bronze which thrills me to no end. Some of you may know I am a huge fan of BECCA Eye Tint.    It makes a fabulous, crease-proof, waterproof, base to any shadow as well as looking good on its own and perfect for setting BECCA Shimmer Powders, Jewel Dusts and Soft Touch blushes (I love to set Wisp into Baroque, the original Eye Tint shade).

I wish I had all the products to give you a full review but these are some of BECCA's most tried and true items and knowing their good taste in colors I can only assume I will be very happy when my box of BECCA Spring arrives on my doorstep.

Please click on the pictures of the collection and the two models for larger images.

Beauty Picks for Valentines Day

NARS Arabesque Nail Polish (pink glitter in a sheer pink base) $16
This makes the prettiest polish for the toes! I love the sheer pink and the glitter is a larger round shape with ruffle cut edges.

This I did for Annie but I think it's fun. Chanel Black Satin topped with NARS Arabesque (sorry I'm not good at taking polish shots)

Philosophy Candy Hearts $25

I was given this as a Valentine's Day gift and it's too cute. The box even has the to and from like the candy heart boxes we used to pass out at school. Each tube has an appropriate label for the holiday and the flavors and texture of the lip shines are surprisingly really nice. Each is a light tint with a touch of sparkle! I love the Melon Daiquiri, the Vanilla Birthday Cake is yummy too and the Rasberry Sorbet is tasty as well!

Happy Valentine's Day!
